Transform 16+ Redundant Power BI Visuals Into One Dynamic Chart Using Field Parameters

Does your Power BI dashboard look like this?

Four versions of the same bar chart in Power BI! Although these visuals look different, they’re all built using the same DAX measure and the same chart type. The only thing that changes is the dimension on the axis.

This approach is known as report sprawl in Power BI development—and it’s a design issue.

The problem becomes more obvious when you go beyond a single KPI. Once you add measures like Total Quantity, Total Orders, and Total Profit. Very quickly, you end up with 16 or more charts that are essentially repeating the same analysis.

As a result, reports become bloated, dashboard space is wasted, performance can degrade, and users are forced to navigate through unnecessary visuals. 


The Solution: Power BI Field Parameters!

Power BI Field Parameter is a feature that allows you  to create dynamic charts that users can reconfigure themselves.

Instead of those four separate Power BI charts above, you'd have one dynamic Power BI visual with two Power BI slicers. Users select their dimension, and the Power BI chart updates instantly.

How to Set up Field Parameter

Step 1: Create Your Y-Axis Field Parameter in Power BI

Navigate to Modeling tab > New Parameter > Fields in Power BI Desktop

In the Power BI Parameters dialog:
    • Name it "Y AXIS"
    • Select the dimensions for your Power BI report: Product Category, State or Province, Region, Customer Segment
    • Check "Add slicer to this page" to create a Power BI slicer
    • Click Create

Power BI automatically generates your field parameter and adds a slicer to your Power BI report page.

Step 2: Create Your X-Axis Field Parameter in Power BI

Repeat the process for your Power BI measures:

    • Create another Power BI Field Parameter
    • Name it "X AXIS"
    • Add your DAX measures: Total Sales, Total Quantity, Total Orders, Total Profit
    • Check "Add slicer to this page" for Power BI slicer functionality
    • Click Create

You now have two Power BI slicers controlling your dynamic visual.

Step 3: Build Your Dynamic Power BI Chart

Add a Power BI bar chart to your canvas. Instead of using regular fields:

    • Drag the "Y AXIS" field parameter to your Power BI visual's Y-axis
    • Drag the "X AXIS" field parameter to the Values well

Your Power BI chart is now completely dynamic and interactive.

How Power BI Field Parameters Work

Users can select the measure and category of interest on the two slicers and get desired information.
One Power BI visual. Multiple analytics combinations. No Power BI bookmarks, no complex DAX code, no custom navigation.

Did you know you can make your Power BI dashboards more engaging by adding icons directly with DAX measures?

The trick is to use the UNICHAR() function in Power BI, which allows you to display Unicode characters (like ✅, ❌, ▲, ▼, and ⭐) inside your visuals.

This method is lightweight, flexible, and doesn’t require custom visuals, making it perfect for creating professional Power BI reports that stand out.

What is the UNICHAR() Function in Power BI?

The UNICHAR() function in DAX returns a Unicode character based on the numeric code you provide.

For example:

  • UNICHAR(9989) → ✅

  • UNICHAR(10060) → ❌

  • UNICHAR(9650) → ▲

  • UNICHAR(9660) → ▼

You can easily find Unicode character codes online (e.g., search for Unicode check mark code or use this reference) and use them in Power BI.

Sample Dataset 

Here’s a simple dataset you can import into Power BI to try out the UNICHAR function:

Step 1: Create a DAX Measure with Icons

Let’s say you want to display a check mark (✅) if sales are above target and a cross (❌) if not.

Here’s how to write the measure:


Sales Status = 
IF(
    SUM(Sales[SalesAmount]) >= SUM(Sales[Target]),
    UNICHAR(9989),
    UNICHAR(10060)
)

This measure will return either a check mark or a cross depending on sales performance.

Step 2: Use the Measure in a Table or Matrix

  1. Add the Sales Status measure to a Table or Matrix visual.

  2. Power BI will display either ✅ or ❌ for each product row.

You can even combine text with icons for better readability:


Sales with Icon = 
IF(
    SUM(Sales[SalesAmount]) >= SUM(Sales[Target]),
    UNICHAR(10003) & " On Target",
    UNICHAR(10060) & " Below Target"
)

This way, users see both the symbol and a label in your Power BI report.

    Prerequisites

      • Power BI Desktop ( October 2023 or later)
      • Basic understanding of DAX time intelligence functions

    Step 1: Enable Calculation Groups

    The PBIX file is the primary working file in Power BI Desktop. It's your all-in-one Power BI project file that contains everything you need for your business intelligence reports.

    In Power BI Desktop:

      1. Open your Power BI report
      2. Switch to Model view
      3. Right-click in the model pane
      4. Select New calculation group

    Step 2: Create Your First Calculation Item

    Power BI automatically creates a default calculation item. Configure it as your baseline:

    1. Rename the calculation item to "Current"
    2. Use this formula
    
   Current = SELECTEDMEASURE()

    This returns the selected measure value without any modification.

    Step 3: Add Previous Month Logic

    Create a new calculation item for previous month comparisons:

    1. Right-click → New Calculation Item
    2. Name it "PM" (Previous Month)
    3. Enter this DAX formula:

    Step 6: Rearrange the Measures 

    To rearrange the measures:

    • Click on "Calculation Items"
    • Open the "Properties" pane.
    • Drag to arrange the measures in the right order

    Using Calculation Groups in Power BI Reports

    Matrix Visual Implementation

      1. Add a Matrix visual to your report
      2. Rows: Add your dimension (Product ID)
      3. Columns: Add your Calculation Group (Time Intelligence)
      4. Values: Add your base measure (Total Revenue)

    Switch from Revenue to Profit:

      • Simply replace the base measure in the Values field
      • All time intelligence calculations update automatically
      • Current, PM, MoM, MoM %, YTD all work instantly
